Directed by Kyoo-man Lee and released in it’s home country of South Korea in 2011.
Children… is based on the true events of the disappearance of five Korean boys in 1992. In the past 20 years, Korean cinema has produced some of the best films and they really do just keep on churning them out. The film is full of emotion and mystery which are what they do best.
At its heart it’s a fine detective story – which isn’t even led by detectives, a professor and a TV producer do their utmost to uncover everything they can – but on the surface it’s a heartfelt story of the parents who give up their lives to finding their children but to no avail. The opening and closing scenes are fantastic and do well to parallel the entire story in between.
The case still is unsolved though so it was well done on the filmmakers part to keep it ambiguous. The score is also magnificent and would undoubtedly make my top 5 scores of the year.
